SMALL CLASS SIZES

We're a small, boutique training and consultancy practice, not a large, bureaucratic corporation. This means that we're not interested in cramming as many candidates onto a course as possible as we believe this severely decreases the quality learning experience we're seeking to provide.

We cap our classroom course candidate numbers to eight per course. This not only provides a stimulating, engaging learning environment where candidates can enjoy the course together and share the experience, but also ensures that everyone has the opportunity to absorb and understand the subject in a comfortable, no-stress way.

NEBOSH General Certificate

SUMMARY

The NEBOSH General Certificate is held by more people in the UK than any other health and safety qualification. The certificate helps managers, supervisors and other members of staff to manage risks effectively by giving them a broad understanding of health and safety issues. In fact, many people use the qualification as a stepping stone to a career in health and safety.

This qualification is accepted by IOSH – the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health – in meeting the academic requirements for Technician membership of IOSH (Tech IOSH). It is also accepted by the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) for Associate membership (AIIRSM). The Certificate can also be a useful step towards achieving the NEBOSH National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety.

PRE-REQUESITES

There are no pre-requisites to enrol on this course. However, it is advantageous that candidates wishing to obtain the NEBOSH General Certificate have a general understanding of Managing Safely prior to attending the course, but this isn't a requirement.

COURSE DURATION

All three course modules can be completed in the classroom in 10 days, split into two separate 5-day sessions.

QUALIFICATION STRUCTURE

The General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety is divided into three units:

Unit NGC1: Management of health and safety

  • Unit NGC1 is a taught unit, assessed by one two-hour written examination
  • Each written examination consists of ten ‘short-answer’ questions (8 marks each) and one ‘long-answer’ question (20 marks)
  • Each examination paper covers the whole NGC1 unit syllabus. All questions are compulsory
  • Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH

Unit GC2: Controlling Workplace Hazards

  • Unit GC2 is a taught unit, assessed by one two-hour written examination
  • Each written examination consists of ten ‘short-answer’ questions (8 marks each) and one ‘long-answer’ question (20 marks)
  • Each examination paper covers the whole GC2 unit syllabus. All questions are compulsory
  • Candidate scripts are marked by external examiners appointed by NEBOSH

Unit GC3: Health and safety practical application

  • Unit GC3 is assessed by one practical assessment carried out in the candidate’s own workplace
  • This is held on a date set by the accredited course provider and must normally be taken within 10 working days of a written examination
  • The practical examination is internally assessed by the accredited course provider and externally moderated by NEBOSH

QUALIFICATION GRADES

Candidates will need to pass all three units within a five year period to achieve the qualification. The five year period commences from the result declaration date of the first successful unit. Units which have a ‘Pass’ mark but are older than 5-years, will not be counted towards the overall qualification. Any such units will need to be retaken and a ‘Pass’ achieved in the unit/s before the qualification can be awarded.

Candidates who are successful in an individual unit will be issued with a unit certificate, normally within 40 working days of the issue of the result notification. Units are not graded and the unit certificates will show a ‘Pass’ only.

When candidates have been awarded a unit certificate for all three units (ie, have achieved a Pass in units NGC1, GC2 and GC3), the marks are added together and a final grade is awarded as follows:

  • Pass 150 - 179 marks
  • Credit 180 - 209 marks
  • Distinction 210 marks or more
